General Listing of Movie Titles

First and foremost: (UPDATED with movie descriptions)

I want people to dredge their memories for obscure cool films, and great theme ideas so I can make this list long and rich! Around August I will put all the movies on a list for their viewing schedule for the September through to the end of April when the fest will end. I am hosting it at Bermuda college, so that is a full two semester school year. I am willing to go beyond, but that is only if people are interested enough or some have come forward and wish to continue linking with the films.

Here is the list so far (but I really would like more films to pick from the pool):

Kentucky Fried Movie : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076257/

Sketch comedy movie from the 70’s that is politically incorrect.

Coonskin: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071361/

Controversial movie from the late 70’s by cartoon great Ralph Bakshi. Is a vivid and radical commentary on being Black in America, using the very same stereotypes and throwing it back in America’s faces. Was banned when it was released, heavily protested, given an x-rating, and ultimately being pushed underground due to its contents. Follows the tale of a rabbit in a violent Harlem.

Masters of the Universe: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093507/

The above is for the annual St. Skeletor Day, or as the rest of our society calls it: Valentine's Day. What better than to show the cheesy Heman Masters of the Universe flick during this day. I am open to ideas on other ways to celebrate this oh so new and cool holiday! Heman fights Skeletor … on earth. Everyone else tags along for a good ol’ cheesey romp.

The Adventures of Buckeroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086856/

The above is a personal favorite of mines, riddled with bad improv and quotable dialogue. The jokes can be subtle but great. Buckeroo Banzai, son of a Japanese physicist and an American woman, surgeon, genius, rock star, and adventurer; builds a speed machine and ends up jumping through the 8th Dimension. Insanity ensues as he knocks an imprisoned alien into our dimension. Watch out for the Jamaican-accented, loc-headed actors who portray the aliens who threaten to blow up earth. John Big Booty! (circa 80’s)

Repo Man: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087995/

The above is 80's punk gold about a car with a mystery in its trunk.

A Boy and His Dog: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072730/

Post Apocalyptic tale from the 70’s of a boy wandering the wastes with his psychic dog. He discovers a subterranean group of survivors with devious plans for this youth.

Eraserhead: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074486/

David Lynch cult classic from the late 70’s about a dytopic future in which everything is a chemical industry nightmare. Food can’t stay still on plates and ooze chemicals. Even the womb isn’t safe. A man is left to care for his deformed baby after his girlfriend abandons him. He slowly goes insane and one wonders if this grotesque creature birthed by man’s impurities is pure evil.

Altered States: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080360/

Potent South American drugs cause a scientist in a sensory deprivation tank to experience some trippy journeys as his body de-evolves and evolves.

The Thing + They Live (John Carpenter Badassness): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084787/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096256/

Both starring Kurt Russel. In The Thing, a creature stalks the crew of a base in the remote cold tundra wastes of Antarctica. It has the ability to change its shape so paranoia is high as everyone suspects each other of being the creature. In They Live, a town is taken over by aliens who look like humans. What are their plans for humanity?

Battle Royal: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266308/

In the near future, Japanese society descends into chaos. In a place where respect for the elders is golden, Japanese school children become out of control, rebelling against their elder generation, attacking teachers and dropping out of school early. In fear, an act was passed to quell rebellious tendencies in students by randomly selecting a class and placing them on an island together where they fight it out until the last man standing. This movie takes a look at one of those classes and the sorts of bond and true human behaviour that shines out of people placed in desperate situations.

Ninja the Final Duel: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091636/

"Im' the Black Monk ... from Harlem." Cheesy, badly dubbed kongfu flick from 1990. It was once a tv series in the 80’s, but was reduced and badly edited to make a film. A Japanese Buddhist goes to China to train, but finds the temple being attacked by a warlord thirsty for revenge. Watch out for the fighting spiders, the naked martial arts chick, the black monk, the quasi gay sidekick, and the white guys from California.

Attack the Gas Station: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0262246/

A group of bored Korean guys attack a gas station, all for fun. Comedy.

To be continued ...

And of course Mystery Science Theater 3000, TV Shows like The Boondocks, and whatever else YOU want to bring to the table!!!

As a matter of fact, each night of film will have one 15 - 30 minute cartoon segment showing before the film begins. This way the early birds get an extra treat. The cartoon will be grab bag, pick a name out of a hat up in the air.

Introduction

Hey all,

This movie fest is, of course, in the planning phase with an eye for the first installment debuting sometime early September.

I wish to have it at least twice a month at max and am willing to modify it for special showings for holidays or if people just want to get together and watch a movie with like minded individuals.

THE GOAL:

Yea, why am I doing this? Well, Bermuda lacks an indie/art house theater. If I want to see obscure films, I have to wait for BIFF or catch something randomly around campus or at BUEI. I miss the freedom I enjoyed while away at school to go to a art theater, check their monthly schedule and go see a film that isn't so conventional and is not in the other theaters.

But I want to go deeper than just indie/art house! I enjoy movies and I enjoy them best with other people who have a passion for them. I don't just want any old type of movie though, I want movies that are outside the norm, even outside the so called indie/art house norm. I want old obscure films, new films, bad films and good films. I want this to a be festival that exposes people to new tastes in film, and more importantly expose them to colorful minded people (fuck like minded, we need some weirdos!!). I want discussion and interaction with the film instead of just silent viewing and then leaving afterwards - not being able to talk about a film is like eating half a candy bar and saying you ate it all. Frankly I want a regular fest of films people can attend where they know they will encounter something new, thoughtful and open discussion, and camaraderie!

So, let's do this joint!
